Every Famous Model Was Once Told She is Not Good Enough

gisele-bundchen-youngThe recent Vogue article about Gisele Bundchen reveling that she was told many times that she is not good enough to ever be on magazine cover due to her nose prompted us to do some investigation on how many models had the same problem and what it took to become famous.

It took Gisele 2 years and 42 casting rejections to finally be chosen to cat walk for a major brand Alexandr McQueen. It really means that everyone rejected her first YSL, Chanel, Gucci, Dior – everyone! She kept on working because she said she knew she got a chance.

Dropped out of school at 15 to pursue modeling career and moved in with her boyfriend, Kate Moss was modeling a lot, but wasn’t earning enough money for descent food or lodging. She was told into her face that she is just “a common bitch”. Kate knew she was smaller than average model and that she won’t do well on cat walk. But she has so much confidence that she personally just walked in to a Calvin Klein casting at age 18, without a referral. Calvin chose her because he liked that she looked plain and not aggressive. He had a great vision.

Cindy was teased by classmates for her now a signature mole. She was told she has a chocolate on her face. She considered to get her mole removed but was convinced by her mother that instead of the mole there will be a scar. She dropped out of first year of Northwestern University to pursue modelling career because she felt there is place to her in big fashion.

linda-evangelistaLinda Evangelista

Linda was a Canadian young model and everything moved for her smoothly after she was head hunted during the Miss Niagara beauty pageant. She actually rejected the career herself because one time in Japan she was asked to pose nude. Linda refused to do the job, returned to Canada and took two years to try modelling again.

Gigi-Hadid-Blonde-HairGigi Hadid

While Gigi was modeling since age of 5 due to her famous mother’s connections, she was rejected to model for Victoria’s secret two times. She was told she is not skinny enough. Disregarding her ultra famous status she didn’t take rejection personally and kept on auditioning until this year when she made her first appearance as Victoria’s Angel

Who knows a lot about rejection is Karolina Kurkova. A Czech model who had one of the toughest career paths. Being from a poor country with no English or affluent friends, and even with no belly button, Karolina moved to New York to become a model. She faced a lot of rejection because of unusual body feature, but it didn’t take long before she became Victoriya’s Angel.

There is Something Similar Among Dior Homme Models

Dior Homme is a men brand. And this brand has a specific man in mind. Just like Tom Ford said that his designs are tailored for a tall and slim man, Dior Homme is also constantly forming an image for their wearers. In conclusion Dior Homme sunglasses will make you look more romantic, sexier and bolder. These accessories are for real men with rich lives and many problems 🙂 Dior Homme producers choose specific models, that not only looks similar sort of, they also have similar lifestyles and similar troubles. Let’s analyze.

dior homme jude lawLatest model Jude Law. A Brit, very handsome, a sex symbol really. He looks very young, even thought he is above 40 already. Jude Law still looks in his 20s. By the film roles he chooses lately we can tell that he is a person of humor. He also has lot’s of troubles with women. According to most rescent news, he is expecting a fifth child with his ex!!! girlfriend. What, not only they are not married, they are already exes and she is pregnant, and that is just fine with Jude Law. But it makes woman mad. So, here you go Dior Homme.

dior homme pattisonRobert Pattinson is also another current Dior Homme model. He is also a Brit, he is tall and slim. A sex symbol for sure. He is much younger than Jude Law, still in his 20s, but he does look older, we give him 32. His film roles are diverse, but more on the romantic side. He does have woman troubles. But this time, his own image is clean. His wifey Kristen Stewart chetaed on him according to tabloids and he forgave her. This made a lot of women super mad. So this Dior Homme guy is one of a kind.

dior homme modelsOther Dior Homme models are not as famous, but they have appearance similarities. They have very sleek faces, very neutral, almost CIA-ish . They have bold facial expressions making you wonder that they are either robots or have a lot of life problems. But they are handsome and look very pleasant. Just a bunch of young boys.

Great Muses For Great Designers.

Pierre Cardin and Maya Plisetskaya

Pierre Cardin and Maya Plisetskaya

Every fashion designer has a muse. Yes, like most people they are inspired by outside world, politics, economy and each other. But there is always one woman on the top of their lists who provides a lot of inspiration by her personality, her own style and time that she influences. We took a look at the most notorious relations:

Hubert de Givenchy and Audrey Hepburn

They were great friends and through tight collaboration helped each other rise to success. Who does not know about her black dress in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”? There were many more in countless Audrey’s movies. Givernchy understood her petite fragile figure and was inspired by her open child-like personality. Audrey once said “His are the only clothes in which I am myself. He is far more than a couturier, he is a creator of personality”. Their friendship began in 1953, years before Givenchy label was established, and lasted for over 40 years.

Pierre Cardin and Maya Plisetskaya

Maya Plisetskaya is a legendary Russian prima ballerina, who became prima at age 40 and danced lead roles through her late 60’s, was Pierre Cardin’s biggest muse. Few people know that the famous designer made over 30 visits to Moscow during his career. They met at her open air performance after which Pierre was left mesmerized with her frail figure, and famous Swan Lake dance. Now both retired, Pierre and Maya keep in touch by paying each other visits in France and Moscow.

Jean Paul Gaultier and Madonna

Madonna’s signature cone bra will for ever be associated with Jean Paul Gaultier style. Their friendship goes back to early 1980’s. Just recently at Jean Gaultier’s exhibition in Paris, Madonn’a bra gained more publicity than the Gaultier’s show itself. Gaultier’s created a famous corset for her 1990 Blonde Ambition tour. Two rebellious souls have collaborated for over 30 years with Gaultier keeping busy making most of her outfits for the singing shows. The most resent one was for her 2006 Confessions tour.

Valentino Garavani and Ann Hathaway

Ann Hathaway is Valentino’s last and most famous muse. She has been wearing Valentino for years to all kind of red carpet appearances, but just this year a pair revealed their friendship to public after past Oscar. Valentino said that Ann Hathaway is like a daughter to him and that he will continue making beautiful gowns for a Hollywood beauty. Valentino was around long enough to do magic for many American’s, including Jacqueline Kennedy for whom he designed a wedding dress and for Nancy Reagan for whom he made countless outfits for her public appearances. Ann Hathaway was a new fresh face for a designer who sought youth for his last designs before officially retiring 5 years ago.

John Galliano and Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron wears Galliano’s creations for most of her red carpet appearances. She continues to be Dior’s face after Galliano left the fashion house, but it was with Galliano when friendship began. Similar to Audrey Hepburn with Givenchy perfume, Charlize Theron will be forever associated with Dior’s J’adore fragrance that came out close to a decade ago. She wore his dress to receive Oscar award and was among very few to stand by him through out his Dior firing ordeal. A true friend knows the designer better than public, she kept in touch during his lengthy rehab last year.

Why Models Kill Themselves

Hayley Kohle, a Canadian model, who was found dead in Milan due to falling from the balcony

Hayley Kohle, a Canadian model, who was found dead in Milan due to falling from the balcony

If you look at the list of recently deceased fashion models you will realize that staggering amount died from suicide. Drug overdose is not considered a suicide, by the way, it is considered accident, as most of people overdose in accident without intention to end their life. Model Suicide could be via jumping, shooting, hanging or other self inflicted injuries. According to American Association of Suicidology not all suicide attempts are successful, only 1 in 25 attempts will result in death. There are more models who try then those make it to the press due to actual apparent suicide.

With models however, many deaths are very suspicious. Just like death of Russian model Ruslana Korshunova who is believed to have jumped to death from her New York apartment. Her friends and family still sure that there was more to it than depression. Many think she was getting death threats and was “helped” out of the window. Same story with Canadian model Hayley Marie Kohle, who also, was found dead after jumping from a balcony in Milan. Since she was not known for any particular mental issues, her friends and family, also are unsure about the cause of death. If these suspicious suicides are taken out of statistics, model rate of suicide would go down closer to average.

All real suicides are preceded by extensive depression. But what causes such a heavy depression that triggers young, successful and beautiful people end their life, often at the peak or the rise of their careers?

Among top 3 reasons for suicide are:

1. Depression, often combined with mental disorder

2. Relationship difficulties

3. Alcohol or drug abuse disorder

Among other reasons is violence in the family, financial and legal problems. This is often on the top of the first three reasons. A person might be depressed because she is facing relationship difficulties.

Models are vulnerable to depression due to the hyper active lifestyle that often entails working long hours without rest and food, but for a short periods of time. The nature of model profession is that they have to show up for castings without being paid for the time. They often will not get a job as a result of a day spent on casting. Another problem of model lifestyle is that they live from job to job, casting to casting and do have lots of free time in between for drugs and alcohol. They also face extreme pressure to look thin.

Here are some reasons for suicide of top models in the past few years:

  • Wallis Franken, Italian Voque cover model, jumped from the window. Among reasons for suicide was abuse by her husband, Claude Montana. She also lost a child and struggled with endless castings resulting in no job.
  • Colombian supermodel and television presenter Lina Marulanda, also jumped. Shortly before her death she undergone a nasty divorce and faced problems at work.
  • Korean model Daul Kim hanged herself in her apartment. She was also an aspiring artist, but prone to depression and metal illness.

High Paid Careers: Supermodels

Only an elite few women make it to the ranks of the supermodel. These women are mostly known by their first names, and can command many millions for an advertising campaign or for promoting a new perfume or fashion brand. Faces come and go out of fashion like the clothing brands they promote, but who is on the top of the catwalk league?

Gisele Bundchen

At the very top of the model pecking order is Brazilian model Gisele Bundchen, who earns an estimated $45 million per year. Her success is due not only to her catwalk and catalogue modelling assignments but also due to her endorsements of products as diverse as shampoos and flip flops. She is married to a well-known American football player and has a son, Benjamin. Although at 32 Gisele is coming to the end of her modelling career, her high profile and budding acting career should keep her in the public eye for some time to come.

Kate Moss

One of the most enduring supermodels is Kate Moss, the girl from Croydon who was famously discovered standing in a queue at an airport. Kate was at the peak of her fame through the 1990s when her elfin, almost emaciated look was highly fashionable. She still works as the face of Rimmel cosmetics and has designed her own line of hourglass dresses and other items for Top Shop, and her total earnings are estimated to be around $10 million per year.

Natalia Vodianova

Natalia is not a household name in the way that Kate or Gisele are, but she shot to fame at the age of just 15 when she enrolled in a modelling academy and was immediately snapped up by top agencies. She is one of the hardest working catwalk and fashion magazine models, and has worked with top designers such as Stella McCartney, Chanel, Calvin Klein and Versace. Her “look” is sporty and athletic rather than overtly skinny, and she looks equally good in clingy hourglass dresses as in jeans, and it is this versatility which leads to her earning upwards of $8.5 million annually.

Adriana Lima

Another Brazilian, Adriana Lima’s career began when she won a modelling competition sponsored by a large US modelling agency. She is best known as being the face of lingerie brand Victoria’s Secret, which is huge in America but has yet to make a large scale impact on the UK market. Adriana also promotes Maybelline cosmetics and has two children with her basketball playing husband.

Doutzen Kroes

Another Victoria’s Secret model is Doutzen Kroes, who was born and raised in the Netherlands. She also promotes L’Oreal products and fronts high profile advertising campaigns for brands such as Valentino and Gucci. Since having her first child she has taken a step back from the catwalk work and has recently done campaigns for jewellery brand Tiffany. Since moving to New York to further her modelling career she has also been taking acting lessons and hopes to start taking on movie roles as her modelling career declines.

If you’re looking for great catwalk-inspired clothing then look no further than online retailers like Peppermint UK.  From a dress for hourglass figure, to fashion-forward footwear, you can find all of the latest trends being stomped on the catwalk by highest paid supermodels such as those mentioned above.

Kate Middleton Pregnant. Now for Her Fashion Choices

It’s officially been confirmed that Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, is pregnant. The speculation surrounding her fashion choices lately and her constantly touching her stomach went into overdrive with the couple eventually spilling the happy beans. Now, not only will the world be waiting to meet the new little royal, but with Kate considered a fashion icon, her clothing choices she will be closely monitored, as she will soon be sporting a baby bump.

Dressing HRH

The news of the pregnancy came a little earlier than the royals would have liked because Kate was taken to hospital earlier this week due to acute morning sickness. Once she’s back to her royal duties it will be just a matter of time that fashion houses will be designing maternity outfits for Kate Middleton to comfortably showcase her pregnancy. All Kate’s outfits have been selected by her and she has made a point of never endorsing designers, rather preferring to wear classic and chic designs by the likes of Stella McCartney and several other high-end brands.

Kate Middleton and Prince William were recently at St Andrews where Kate was seen in one of her many stylish dresses, wearing heels, and playing hockey with the students. The lady does not protest too much to doing any form of sport, pregnant or not. Clearly not wanting everyone to know their fantastic news just yet, the couple happily went about their royal duties and nothing was out of the ordinary, apart from the twinkle in Kate Middleton’s eye. Even then she couldn’t stop herself from wearing a dress that gave nothing away across her midsection.

Her recent fashion choices appear to have been anything chic that would not tell the story of an impending birth. Recently the Duchess was seen looking effortlessly chic in a Matthew Williamson dress, which had a flap across the front that gave nothing away. Kate Middleton knows her dresses, designers and how to keep the public guessing.

The royal pregnancy has the public waiting with baited breath and it’s been said that the royals are extremely delighted that William and Kate will be parents. Considering William’s protective nature surrounding Kate Middleton’s introduction to the life of a royal, it’s easy to believe their little one will have all the necessary love, nurturing and protection possible. If it’s a girl, there’s no doubt that the little Kate Middleton’s will be among the best dressed and most popular celebrity babies ever.

Vida Denning is a freelance writer who is a huge Kate Middleton fan. Her choices of formal jackets for William and herself as well as her dresses are turning her into an icon. All fashion fans are waiting to see her stylish maternity choices in the near future.

Lance Armstrong to Lose all Titles. Is it Fair?

Today USADA (US Anti Doping Agency) has won a fight against Lance Armstrong, worlds most famous cyclist, to strip him of all titles and ban him for life from ever competing again. These news are rather shocking, given that ban span over a decade back, making Lance worlds most penalized athlete.

Up until today most of people know Lance Armstrong as the only athlete to ever win 7 Tour de France competitions. America’s best also scored a bronze and silver Olympic medals. He is also known for his charity Livestrong, largest private contributor to testicular cancer research. Since the foundation was formed in 1997 it raised over $500 million. Oakley Livestrong collection of sunglasses was among the main tools of that.

Today we learn more about the Lance Armstrong doping scandal that apparently was in investigations for years, somehow staying under the press radar, mainly due other great deeds of this great athlete and a public figure. It all came to an end after numerous appeals have been lost. Today Lance has dropped a fight citing according to Yahoo News:

“There comes a point in every man’s life when he has to say, ‘Enough is enough.’ For me, that time is now,” Armstrong said. He called the USADA investigation an ”unconstitutional witch hunt.”

But USADA found its reasons. Organization that was formed in 2000 to uncover “cheaters” of sport, was on Lance’s tail since the beginning. It all started in 1999 when after winning Tour de Frace Lance’s urine contained a very small, acceptable amount of anti-inflammatory drug. USADA put Lance on a hot list of potential offenders. Next serious allegation came in 2004 when he was denied $5 million bonus by a sponsor for winning Tour de France that year because of media speculations that he “might have” used banned substance. There was no proof, but clearly $5 million was worth a fight for a sponsor. Rumors took over with some testimonies from former teammate and his ex wife that he allegedly confessed to cancer treatment doctors that he used steroids in the past. The fact that these were just rumors from people having obvious motive to undermine his reputation, was not taken into account.

Last Tour de France performance was in 2009 when he came third. All of this after fighting a deadly cancer.

Can a man of the Lance Armstrong profile be really taking banned drugs for years, continuously passing all kind of doping tests? How can one year where he clearly passed the test be put as a proof for all next years when tests came out clean? And what power does USADA over Tour de France, a private competition run over Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO). By the way ASO has yet to come out with a statement regarding this.

Lance is trying to finish this with class saying ”I have been dealing with claims that I cheated and had an unfair advantage in winning my seven Tours since 1999,” he said. ”The toll this has taken on my family and my work for our foundation and on me leads me to where I am today – finished with this nonsense.”

”Today I turn the page. I will no longer address this issue, regardless of the circumstances,” he said. ”I will commit myself to the work I began before ever winning a single Tour de France title: serving people and families affected by cancer, especially those in underserved communities.”

We surely hope that this will not affect the reputation of Livestrong collection of Oakley sunglasses. Maybe Livestrong Oakleys will soon become a collectible?

Fall Eyewear Styles

Here are ten reasons why fall is an amazing season for sunglasses:

  1. Sun is not as bright in the fall as it is in the summer. Lenses of lower intensity will be more comfortable. You can finally try gradient fills and softer lens colors.
  2. Fall/Winter 2011 sunglasses collections for most brand names are released. They are paired with Spring/Summer 2012 clothing collections that were released as well.
  3. Fall sunglasses are perceived more as a fashion accessory as oppose to must have functionals due to less intensive sun in the fall. You can experiment more with shapes and designs of glasses to dress up your overall fall look.
  4. Fall is back to work, back to school, back to intensive driving and travelling for many people. A new pair of glasses or prescription sunglasses is absolutely must-have for many
  5. Have you lost your fav pair of sunglasses somewhere on the beach this year? No worries, fall is a great time to get a new pair.
  6. Many movies have been released over the summer. Sunglasses that were pre-released through films are finally out, just like Cameron Diaz Prada PS 01LS from “Bad Teacher”.
  7. Summer is over, Winter is approaching – a vacation season for many. New swims, new beaches, new sunglasses
  8. Fall’s winds may be heavy, but a good pair of sunglasses will protect your skin, eyes and makeup even in the most severe twists.
  9. Fall is time to start thinking about ski season, that in some regions start as early as October. New pair of designer ski shades like this Gucci 1653 is waiting for you.
  10. You’ve been working a summer job so hard earning extra money. Now is time to spend it. Nothing beats designer sunglasses by price/satisfaction ratio

Why High Collar Shirts are So Hard to Find

Ever since Karl Lagerfeld reinvented himself and lost 90 pounds 10 years ago he started to wear high fashion clothing and with years progressing his style turned into a focal point of media and press. In fact Karl Lagerfeld is the most photographed designer in the world and the most known. He explained his weight loss “I suddenly wanted to dress differently, to wear clothes designed by Hedi Slimane”. Hedi Slimane is a French fashion designer who is currently working on releasing his own label. Among his notable employers are Dior (Dior Homme collection), Prada and Gucci. Perhaps Slimane was the one to come up with a high collar shirt design that Karl has been wearing over and over again.

But if you try to purchase a shirt like that you will run into trouble. Shockingly none of the big man labels are carrying them. Not even Harry Rosen, not even Chanel itself. Why? What is so hard about it?

Well, partially is that a true high collar, one that goes all the way to the chin, must be custom made. Historically all men shirts were custom made. Collars were detachable. Karl’s shirts are made that way too. There was an episode in the beginning of Private Confidential biographic documentary where it is shown that Karl has a massive drawer with probably couple of hundreds of such collars. When inquired from Chanel store manager in Toronto it was confirmed that shirts are indeed custom made for Karl. Just look at the variety? Collars and cuffs are often of a different color to create contrast. Sometimes they are of the same fabric as the shirt on the outside and have inner lining on the inside. Until Hedi Slimane or another men designer will start including these shirts into ready-to-wear collections all we got is to enjoy pictures of fashionable Karl.
