Prada Plans for IPO

Prada – one of the world’s largest private fashion brands has announced yet another attempt to go public. Prada, currently trading on Milan stock exchange has announced plans for IPO at Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Listing date is currently set to June 23 or 24, 2011.

According to recent valuation company is worth anywhere from $10 billion to $15 billion. It has been announced that 20% of stock will be put up at Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

Company has attempted an IPO 4 times in the last 10 years. Most recently, just in 2008 when decision was made to postpone the initiative due to economic crisis. The main goal for IPO is to pay off company’s outstanding debt of $1.4 billion. Over the years of industry struggle Prada was able to sustain firm market standing due to focus on purse and shoes. Over 2010 company reported 150% profits and sales increase. Full year sales for 2010 totalled $2 billion.

Company is currently operated by Patrizio Bertelli, husband of Miuccia Prada – a granddaughter of the founder and a Chief Creative Designer as of 1978. Along with anchor brand Prada, company also owns Miu Miu and two shoe companies – Church’s and Car Shoe.

The Asian IPO is deemed to have a marketing benefit to promote Prada boutiques opened across China, Hong Kong and South East Asia over the past decade. If IPO promotion is done right company may enjoy steep sales increases due to better brand awareness. It could be the most effective marketing technique since “Devil Wears Prada” film. Company is set to open 90 more stores in Asia in the near several years – an unprecedented increase for a foreign brand. This expansion strategy

is necessary to compete with LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton – one of the word largest fashion conglomerate that is exercising very aggressive Asian market penetration strategy.

Prada accessories are among most desired on the market. The collection of Prada eyewear was first launched in 1999 now expanded into Prada and Prada Sport product lines. Eyewear – A Dive in History

Eyeglasses – lenses embedded into a frame to correct vision have a very long and interesting history. What started as an object to fill very important health function has evolved to the object of fashion. Since glasses were put onto a face from their inception lots of consideration was given to their look, lightweight and comfort.

It is beleived that first documented evidence of spectacles appears in Santa Maria Novella dating back to 1306 written by the Dominican friar. According to the documented fact invention is contributed to Allesandro Spina, a Dominican monk. Italy at the time was a glass making country of the world. Before 1300 magnifying glass was already widely used and it was made out of crystal. Traditional glasses lenses made out of glass, but because first models were made out of beryl or rock  they were known as beryls. Term “brillen” is still used in German to refer to glasses.

First surviving picture of glasses circa 1352 is currently displayed in the church of San Niccolo at Treviso.

It didn’t take long before spectacles reached mass use and by early fifteenth century were associated with literacy. This “image” item is common on painitings, frescas and engravings often depicting monks, cardinals and bible preachers of 1400-1900 era.

first glasses glasses history

The earliest spectacles were made with two lenses mounted in rims made out of metal, horn or leather. They were held by hand and worn only when needed. Later a bridge appeared that connected the lenses and pressed them onto the nose.

first glasses glasses history

As technology of lens production improved, so the desire to wear them continuously. Spectacles were prone to fall of the face or hurt the nose. This problem was solved by the arm that was added to the design of glasses at around 1723. Eighteenth century was also an era of widely developing fashion. Glasses were considered an important part of accessory and therefore many designs spurred. Handles were decorated with precious stones, various shapes were made and materials used for the frame. A lot of attention was given to the cases to hold glasses. Cases were engraved, incrustated, often made out or gold, silver and decorated with mother or pearl, colored stones and even diamonds.

An arm that curved under the wig holding spectacles firmly fixed on the head

Of course simplier materials were also widely used. Among them wood – the easiest to finish, industrialized steel, aluminium, and later optyl. Optyl is a light flexible plastic invented in Austria in 1967. Christian Dior was first to use this material in his collection of fashion eyeglasses and sunglasses. Other forms of plastic were used in combination with metal on glasses frames.

Today metal glasses and plastic glasses fragment the market. Silicone nosepads are part of all metal frames today. Glasses frames are further segmeted into full rim, semi-rimless and rimless that is possible to a very advanced technology of lens manufacturing and etching. Lenses technology development has its own chapter in parallel to sunglasses. We will be covering this in the future posts.

Karl Lagerfeld – Master of Sketches

Designers are artists. Most of them are classically trained and all of them possess high skills for drawing. Every outfit design starts with a sketch. Every productive designer produces thousands of sketches per season and as you can imagine only a fraction of them turn into life on a runway or ready to wear stores. I find watching the sketches just as fascinating as watching their collections. We are happy to announce a “Sketches” series where we will show famous designers ‘sketches and analyze them.

To start off, we are pleased to present Karl Lagerfeld. There is a particular interest to his sketches because of his background. In one of his interviews he confessed that he went to school to become a cartoon artist. He also said that sketching for him is like writing text for other people. His loyal team that has been working for him for over 20 years can look at the drawing and know what exactly he wanted an outfit to look like – shapes, fabric type, colors and details. Everything that could be described in pages of text is on one simple drawing. Karl says that he does not understand why other people need text. Well Karl, perhaps other people don’t have drawing skills… Interesting fact about him is that likes to wear Dior Homme glasses.

By looking at Karl sketches we can actually read cartoony style. Karl is one of the few designers who always adds background and a border to his sketches – an extra step that makes them really look like drawings. Ok, enough is said, enjoy the gallery. If you have more photos of his sketches, please let us know; we would love to add links here.

Blogger is Back – Not For Us

As swings in technology happen, downtime is almost a given for a major services like Twitter, Skype and Gmail. We are so used to this that learnt to ignore related news or buzz from our friends. But now with Blogger joining the down time club we just can’t ignore it. Now it hurts right in the heart.

I was absolutely shocked to login to my blog hosted by Blogger and find out that blog is completely gone. GONE! All posts, design and even sub-domain are no longer available. Most peculiar thing is that when I typed my blog name in the search it said “Name is available – go ahead register a blog under this name”. Wow! So, all my followers, posts, links were created for nothing.

Is this a Friday 13 joke?

When I went to Help Forum trying to log a bug with little hope anyone will reply I stumbled on their post “Blogger is Back”. Post was published today at 10:45 AM, probably PST time. So, the statement “Blogger is Back” was made long 3 hours ago and my blog does not seem to have been included as a part of it.

We have had a similar story with Skype unavailability in March and experienced some down time on WordPress few months ago. So, no one is perfect and you can’t expect much of a free blog. This cumulative experience seriously makes us consider using WordPress.org on our own servers. This also prompts us to invest some time and back up all the posts we did on our blogs to avoid hair loss next time.

In the meanwhile, we pray that Blogger will figure things out and be back for sure with our blog inclusive.

Purple Sunglasses – Color Your Life

It is estimated that black and brown colors make over 70 % of all glasses purchases. Even people who have many glasses still tend to get dark frames for sunglasses. But the trend is really towards more color this year. Purple is a great option because it is not very intrusive as compared to yellow for example, but in the same time quite settled. Purple glasses look good with many other colors. It looks nice with black, brown, white, gold, silver, bronze, tortoise and shades of self.

LVMH Invests in Asia

Louis Vuitton Hennessy Moet is the largest luxury brand retailer in the world. French owned LVMH, is publically traded on Euronext – European Stock Exchange under symbol MC. In the last year company posted over €37 billion in assets. Among companies largest subdivisions are well known luxury brands Luis Vuitton, Dior, TAG Heuer, Marc Jacobs and recently acquired Bulgari. A company is big on acquisitions, and over the last few years has been making on average 3-4 large buyouts per year.

But large acquisitions are not the only mechanism for LVMH to keep organic growth. Private investments via its Venture Capital funds is another, very active method for effective growth. Being a global company LVMH has interest in international emerging brands, lately specifically Asian based labels.

L Capital Asia fund is created to do just that – swallow emerging Asian companies in China, India and South East Asia. L Capital Asia is currently a $650 million fund and is head quartered in Singapore. Fund capital was syndicated by LVMH and US and Asian investors with LVMH investing close to 10%.

According to Ravi Thakran, the fund’s managing partner L Capital Asia is concentrating on brands that offer unique products and have capable entrepreneurial managers. Unlike its parent group LVMH, which concentrates on the top tier of the luxury sector, he said the fund focuses exclusively on promising Asian labels looking for a big breakthrough, particularly in the Chinese and Indian markets.

To date L Capital Asia fund has invested $23.5 million in Charles & Keith, Singaporean shoe retailer. The deal was announced on March 22, 2011. LVMH acquired 20% of stake in Charles & Keith.
In the prior deal, announced on February 11, 2011, LVMH purchased significant minority stake in Gitanjali Gems – Indian jewellery brand for $100 million.

Other deals totalled $90 million of stakes in two Singaporean fashion companies and a Hong Kong-listed watch and jewellery company. Very active fund is currently working of another number of deals to be announced shortly via LVMH press centre.

Based on these deals we see that fund is concentrating on well established companies with wide retail operations and proven market success. This investment strategy is in line with LVMH overall investment history where company biggest value add is in growing operations for its subdivisions utilizing the economy of scale for bulk purchased ad space in print media, TV and runway show participation.

In the past few years company showed that they are very serious about their presence in Asian market. According to recent studies conducted by ARC China, sale of luxury goods almost doubled in the past year. Greater China represents 28.0 percent of sales for Swatch, 18.0 percent for Gucci, 14.0 percent for Bulgari and 11.0 percent for Hermes.

LVHM showed zero tolerance for any hint on destructing their reputation among Chinese consumers. Recent fire of John Galliano from House of Dior who publically offended Asian men and Jewish woman, followed shortly by removal of the designer from his own label John Galliano. Sharon Stone remarks against Chinese people after the earthquake in 2008 resulted in stripping of all her Dior ads the following day after the incident in every Chinese mall.

Thus LVMH has set their long term strategy to tapping into fastest growing consumer market in Asia proactively – by not just opening retail locations for their primary brands in China and India, but also investing in promising Asia based labels to grow them at home and world wide.

Trending This Week – Kate Middleton Dress and The Royal Wedding

Following the event of the year The Royal Wedding has stirred some awesome buzz in the fashion industry. A few hours event has brought a number of trends that flew into a fashion world and will stay for a long time.

The Dress

By no doubt that dress was a sensation. Is it because of Alexadr McQueen brand? Probably not. I think no matter what Kate would have worn it would have been a sensation anyway. In fact, there was very little flavour of McQueen flamboyant style in that dress. But from political standpoint choosing a British designer, especially a woman designer (Sarah Burton), it was a calculated move. Style wise the dress followed quite popular in the last few years “A line” shape and lace. Ivanka’s Trump dress from last year, made by Vera Wang, was very similar to one of Kate. Lace sleeves and neckline has been a modern solution for brides that need to cover bear skin for religious, weather or simply preference purposes. This idea has been present in popular wedding dress designers Vivienne Westwood, Pronovias and Monique Lhuillier. Kate Middleton brought this idea to a different level and we will see much more of similar designs this and next year in action.

The Hat

Wearing a matching hat to official events is an old British tradition. While outfit generally stays modest, usually conserved in one color tone, the hat is the object of the wildest fashion ideas. According to our observation hat not always was following the outfit color scheme, fabric or style. It was made a center point of the outfit, and the dress itself was almost an accessory to the hat. Hat adds grandness and festivity to the overall look and no doubt it will become much more popular among young generations in the next coming years.

The Skirt Suit

British ladies are much keener on wearing skirts to work or casually as compared to American women who prefer pants. So it was no surprise that every woman with no exception appeared in a dress or a skirt suit to The Royal Wedding. We must note that preference was given to skirts above the knee. Pencil skirt with a matching jacket or a cardigan was often accompanied by pointy shoes on a short heel. Outfits of this style are classic and are widely available from many designers. We expect to see more options in stores as a result of this wedding.

The Cardigan

Cardigan paired with a set of gloves and a matching skirt is a very elegant solution for ladies that want to appear more formal. In the last few years cardigan has been trending as a coat dress and attempted to enter the mainstream through such manufacturers as Laura, Bedo, Save The Queen and others. Alternatively a dressy cardigan can be worn with a pair of jeans or pants adding elegance to your more casual style for every day outings.

Full Dress For Men

Many men chose penguin style jacket as oppose to short tuxedo. Notably pants often didn’t match the color of the jacket and went as a set with a vest. In some cases all three pieces vest, pants and jacket were of a different color tone with bright tie that gave an outfit less formality.

Many British men of a Royal class wore military uniform which to my opinion was the most fun to watch. The Royal Wedding is one of the few occasions when British men are allowed to put on a Full Dress – the most elaborate order worn by members of British Army. Medals, golden tassels, army bands and a civilian mounted sword were present on outfits of Prince William, Prince Charles, members of the Royal Family and many other local guests. Cute little boys were also wearing replicas of military attire to match the ones of their fathers. We expect that elements of Full Dress military style may turn into a trend for wedding suits in North America following the Royal Wedding.

Sunglasses

Unfortunately sunglasses were not trending during the Royal Wedding. I expected to see at least somebody, but a bit cloudy weather in the morning was not giving enough reason for guests to put on this beautiful accessory. If you find a photo with someone wearing a pair, please let me know.
